OBITUARY

Rex Dale Hoffmeister

Marine Corps

November 20, 1950 - October 5, 2024

Sergeant Major Rex Hoffmeister passed away in Tampa FL, on 5 October, 2024, at the age of 73 following a battle with pulmonary disease.

Rex is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Janet Hoffmeister (Ortega); Daughter Kristen Hoffmeister-Mayberry (Steve); Son John Hoffmeister (Mandy Wilkes); his sister, Delrae Helmick; and his five grandchildren. He was a proud Papa to James, Samuel, Sally, Sophie and Jacob.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Delores Kinzie Wiesner.

He was raised in Fort Madison, Iowa, attending Fort Madison High School.

In 1969 he enlisted in the USMC, Serving in Vietnam and Desert Storm. A proud member of the Marine Security Guard (MSG), Rex served at several American embassies with his family by his side. Also instructing at the MSG School, Quantico VA.

Rex was the recipient of multiple awards throughout his military career, his highest honor being the Bronze Star with Combat V. He remained humble in regards to his many achievements. He spoke the most about the time he spent with his USMC brethren and was known for his dedication to the younger Marines, often reflecting on his sense of connection to them.

With a USMC career spanning almost 30 years, Rex proudly wore the badge of a “Lifer” and “Veteran”.

The consummate handyman, he was always finding a new project to do. Rex enjoyed night fishing, and refinishing antiques. While dining he often sought, with a smile, menu items that strayed from the norm.

In his younger days he was an avid dirt bike rider, scuba diver, water skier, marathon runner, taught rock climbing and rappelling. Rex lived a life of adventure, good food, and love for his family, friends, and fellow Marines. He served humanity in a selfless capacity and would downplay the recognition that came his way for doing so.

A funeral ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery is being arranged at a later date.

The family requests that donations be made to The Semper Fi Fund at https://thefund.org/ in lieu of flowers.
